Divorce Planning Options

These are the most common types of cases we work on and the roles we can play.

We do not provide legal advice.

Collaborative Divorce

What it is: A way for couples to negotiate the terms of the divorce without litigation. Each spouse hires their own attorney, but everyone works together to find a resolution that works.

How we can help: We are available to act as a Financial Neutral in your case. A Financial Neutral helps couples find, organize and understand their financial information with the goal of creating a plan for settlement. Robyn Hill is our lead Financial Neutral.

Mediated Divorce

What it is: You and your spouse meet with a trained mediator who helps you communicate and work through issues to find a reasonable compromise. You are in charge of the outcome. Mediators don’t make decisions or offer legal advice, they just act as a facilitator.

How we can help: We are available to act as a Financial Neutral that will support your mediation through healthy discussion and education about financial topics. A Financial Neutral helps couples find, organize and understand their financial information with the goal of creating a plan for settlement. Robyn Hill is our lead Financial Neutral.

Litigated Divorce

What it is: Each spouse hires their own attorney and if a resolution cannot be found, they go to court and a judge makes the final decision regarding their settlement.

How we can help: We typically approach these cases as a financial consultant and can be available to serve as a witness in trial if necessary. We will define the scope of work and our capabilities during the initial call.

How We Work

During our initial consultation we will get a sense of how much work will be needed and what you are trying to accomplish by hiring us. At the end of our call, we will go over your budget and define the scope of work we can offer.

We typically charge an hourly rate for this type of work and may ask for an upfront retainer fee depending on the complexity of your case.

What is a

Certified Divorce Financial Analyst (CDFA®)?

A CDFA® professional is a financial professional skilled at analyzing data and providing expertise on the financial issues of divorce. The role of the CDFA® professional is to assist the client and his or her attorney to understand how the decisions he or she makes today will impact the client’s financial future. These are some of the factors we review:

  • Emergency savings
  • Budgeting
  • Mortgage
  • Debt
  • Insurance needs
  • Tax consequences
  • Planning for retirement
  • Planning for college
  • Division of pension and other assets
  • Creating short-term and long-term financial goals

While a CDFA can help your attorney make financial sense of settlement proposals, The Institute for Divorce Financial Analysts (IDFA™) highly recommends that any person getting a divorce should seek legal counsel. A CDFA’s role is to assist, not replace, the attorney.
